The casebook of Sherlock Holmes has been re-opened by Tim Symonds who whisks us back to the Edwardian era Sussex countryside in 1904 and a case involving the mysterious Kipling League. A naked body has been found in a wagon pond near Scotney Castle. In one hand the dead man is clutching a pair of dark glasses. With no obvious clues as to who the man was or how he died, Holmes and Watson find themselves drawn into one of their strangest cases yet – one that Holmes himself wanted to remain a secret, but why?

Sometimes, different editors of Dr. Watson’s manuscripts have different specialties. Denis O. Smith brings us incredible stories set in the 1880’s. Marcia Wilson brings an unsurpassed understanding about the world of the Scotland Yarders that has no equal. And Tim Symonds, who has offered a number of well-researched, compelling, and full-length Sherlock Holmes adventures and short stories, essentially specializes in showing Our Heroes’ activities in the early 20th century, when both Holmes and Watson were in their early fifties, and usually when Holmes has retired to Sussex. However, the sedate life will never be enough for Holmes, and an old doctor, soldier, and adventurer like Watson will be right there with him.

This adventure, set in 1904, is set in those early days, just a few months after Holmes has retired. The location is Sussex and Kent, an area that Mr. Symonds knows well, as he actually lives there, knowing both the local layouts and the history. In addition to his excellently researched narratives, he has something that is most important for the pasticheur: Watson’s voice. Clearly, Mr. Symonds has found his way to a part of Watson’s Tin Dispatch Box, and I always know when I read his stories that there won’t be any terribly clumsy surprises that will tear me out of the story. He is a master, and I hope that he finds many more of Watson’s lost cases!
